Denver high school students win lottery to see Michelle Obama

Students and their parents will be going to the Pepsi Center to see the former first lady on her book tour.

Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of the United States, is embarking on a 10-city book tour to launch her new book "Becoming."

Obama said accessibility is important to her, which is why she’s giving away complimentary tickets to people around the country, particularly to young people growing up in communities like she did.

“It’s important to Mrs. Obama that not just people who have means to buy tickets to see her or happen to be sitting in front of their computer when tickets went on sale were able to go,” said Jodie Skodol, counselor at Denver South High School.

“They had a lottery for school counselors to win tickets for themselves and four students,” Skodol said.

The school held a lottery for those tickets.

“There was an opportunity that students had also won tickets for themselves and a parent to also go this evening, and we found out yesterday that 23 students from South won that opportunity,” said Skodol.

Skodol spent the morning handing out tickets to the lucky students, who will be going to the Pepsi Center to see “An Intimate Conversation with Michelle Obama.

“She’s hilarious, she’s funny,” said Junior Hamdi Ali. “She’s less of an old person, but she acts like a younger person in a sense that she knows how to connect with youth.”

“My mom actually saw her a few years ago when she came to Denver,” said Senior Emma Perruccio. “[She] said she was really funny, so I’m looking forward to hearing what she has to say and how’s she’s contributed.”

“Super lucky to witness and watch a leader like her come to the Pepsi Center,” said Sophomore Jackson Willhoit. “I come in as a student and come out as inspired with a new outlook on the world.”

“We will be able to just be in her presence,” Skodol said.
