Deputy, small child killed in southern Colorado crash identified

Las Animas County Sgt. Matthew Moreno, Taelor Roybal, and a one-year-old boy were killed in a crash near Valdez. The deputies were responding to a call when the crash happened.

A Las Animas County Sheriff's deputy, another driver and a child were killed in a crash Wednesday night on Highway 12 near Valdez, according to a release from the Colorado State Patrol.

Deputies in two different patrol cars were responding to a domestic violence call around 8 p.m. Wednesday when they were involved in a crash with another car that was headed in the opposite direction, according to CSP.

The driver of the civilian car, Taelor Roybal, 23, of Trinidad was pronounced dead at the scene. One-year-old Ezekiel Valdez was taken to hospital where he died. CSP could not say how or if Roybal and the child are related.

Sergeant Matthew Moreno, 37, of Trinidad was taken to the hospital where he died. Sergeant Moreno is survived by his two daughters and one stepson, and has been a member of the Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office for five years, according to CSP.

A passenger his vehicle,  Deputy Kenny Lopez, 22, of Trinidad was also injured in the crash. He has three years experience with the Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Trent Gomez, 25, of Trinidad was in a separate vehicle. He had minor injuries related to the crash.  Deputy Gomez has two years experience with the Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office.
