Man barricaded in Edgewater home for 17 hours surrenders to police

The incident in the 2500 block of Fenton Street began just after 7:30 a.m. Friday with a report of shots fired. A suspect was taken into custody early Saturday.

EDGEWATER, Colorado — A 40-year-old man has voluntarily surrendered to law enforcement following a 17-hour standoff where police said he barricaded himself inside of his parent's Edgewater home and fired multiple shots at officers.

The suspect, identified as John Cruz Jr., now faces a litany of charges for the incident, including five counts of attempted murder on a peace officer, felony menacing with a firearm, criminal mischief, failure or refusal to leave premises or property upon request of a peace officer, resisting arrest, and illegal discharge of a weapon. He is slated to be booked into the Jefferson County jail on a $500,000 bond, according to a news release from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

No one was injured.

The standoff began just after 7:30 a.m. on Friday, when a woman who was in her backyard in the 2500 block of Fenton Street heard gunshots and called police.

When police arrived, they said Cruz was yelling through the front door of his parents' home.

He refused to come out for hours, and is accused of exchanging gunfire with police, according to the sheriff's office.

The parents of the suspect involved told police their son was on methamphetamine and had access to multiple weapons, according to Edgewater Police Chief John Mackey. The parents were outside of the home and worked with law enforcement to try and get him to come out. No one else was inside the home, according to Mackey.

A 9NEWS crew was forced to move away from the scene after hearing what sounded like gunshots. Wheat Ridge police confirmed a short time later that the suspect had fired rounds at the SWAT team.

Mackey said law enforcement used a Bearcat, which is an armored police vehicle, robots and drones to try and locate where the suspect was within the home.

The intersection of West 25th Avenue and Fenton Street -- which is only a few blocks west of Sloan's Lake -- closed during the investigation. In addition to the intersection, West 25th Avenue was also closed between Gray and Eaton Streets

A reverse notification call went out to all residents in the area to warn them about the possibly armed person.
