DENVER — Coban Porter, a University of Denver basketball player and brother of Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr., was slurring his speech and had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath when he was taken into custody after a fatal crash Sunday, according to court documents.
The crash happened at 1:54 a.m. at South University Boulevard and Buchtel Boulevard South, at the northeast corner of the DU campus. Porter was driving east on Buchtel at an estimated speed of 50 mph. He ran the red light and hit the victim's vehicle that was heading north on University, the documents say.
The driver of the vehicle that was hit died at the scene. A passenger in the victim's vehicle also suffered injuries, according to the documents.
The Denver Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Katharina Rothman, 42.
Porter, 21, was contacted by a police officer in the back of an ambulance while he was being checked out at the scene and admitted to drinking alcohol earlier in the evening, the documents say.
The officer said in the PC statement that Porter had bloodshot, watery eyes, strongly smelled of an alcoholic beverage, and slurred and mumbled his speech. Porter also wore a Bud Light paper wristband.
Porter was taken into custody at the scene of the crash, police said. He was booked into jail on suspicion on of vehicular homicide, the Denver Sheriff Department said. He posted bond and was released Sunday afternoon.
Porter is a sophomore guard on the DU mens basketball team and a brother of Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. He hasn't played this season due to an ACL injury.
Porter Jr. was out for the Nuggets' Sunday game versus the Oklahoma City Thunder for personal reasons, the team said.
"This is a tragic and heartbreaking situation, and our deepest sympathies are with those involved in the accident, their families, and friends," the University of Denver said in a statement. "All the resources of our campus and broader community, including counseling services, are available to any DU community member in need of assistance 24/7."
The Denver Medical Examiner's Office will release the name of the victim after notification of next-of-kin.
