For one Lafayette preschool, kindness is the curriculum

LAFAYETTE - Kids learn typical preschool stuff at the Learning Experience in Lafayette. Shapes, colors and how to spell their names, for instance.

"Right now we're working on kindergarten preparedness and just making sure they're ready for elementary school," preschool three lead Katie Bailey said.

The preschoolers also learn valuable lessons about sharing and making friends. But instead of just being told to do those things, they're taught why they should do those things.

"It's actually part of the curriculum," Bailey said. "It's less meaningful to just hear 'share your toys, share your toys, be kind,' but why?"

The kids' art project is making superhero capes for kids in the hospital, and their vocabulary word is "humanitarian".

It's a big word, but five-year-olds Malek Abusway and Adalie Kent know what it means.

"You help others that are sick in the hospital," Malek said.

"How to be nice and sweet to other friends," Adelie said.

Those capes will be delivered to Children's Hospital North in Broomfiled as soon as they're ready, and next week the kids start learning a new vocabulary word: "Hope".
