Former Denver radio personality found shot to death

CATALINA ISLAND(AP) - A man whose voice served as an alarm clock for thousands of Denver-area radio listenershas been shot to death.

Now, California investigators are trying to figure out exactly what happened. A ship's captain found the body of 59-year-old Steven B. Williams floating off Southern California's Catalina Island two weeks ago, but a positive identification couldn't be made immediately. The Los Angeles County coroner's office says Williams died of a gunshot wound to the upper torso. Williams was half of the "Steven B.-and the Hawk" morning show on Denver's KBPI-FM during the early 1980s. He later moved to California, took a job as an assistant winemaker, and lived on a boat. Sheriff's spokeswoman Dana Camarillo says the death is being investigated as a homicide. Authorities call it an amazing coincidence that a boater discovered Williams' body and say the man's disappearance could've remained a mystery forever if he hadn't. Williams' radio career started in Hawaii during the 1970s. He later worked at a radio station in Colorado Springs and three in Denver. His KBPI co-host, Don Hawkins, died during routine surgery in 1994.
