Lakewood residents can buy trees for $25 starting Wednesday

The sale is an effort to increase Lakewood's urban tree canopy, the city said.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Starting Wednesday, Lakewood residents can buy trees for $25 each as part of the city's first-ever tree sale

The sale is an effort to increase Lakewood's urban tree canopy, the city said.

The sale starts March 1 and runs until March 31, or while supplies last. It's open to Lakewood residents only, and the trees must be planted within city limits.

The cost is $25 per tree, with a limit of four trees per household.

The city said 10 diverse species of trees will be available, including maple, catalpa, hackberry, redbud, coffee tree, oak, cyprus and linden. Each species provides its own unique color and characteristics. The city has information on its website to help residents pick the right tree for the right place.

The trees vary in size, but most are between 6 and 12 feet in height and about 50 pounds in weight.

Trees can be purchased online or over the phone.

Trees bought during the sale can be picked up the morning of April 15 at the Lakewood Greenhouse at 9556 W. Yale Avenue. Trees must be pre-purchased and will not be available for sale at the tree pickup.

The city said their sustainability plan includes a goal of achieving 30% tree canopy coverage by 2025. A tree canopy assessment in 2022 showed the city’s canopy coverage at 16%.

As part of this effort, the city has funding set aside to support an annual tree sale for residents and to increase plantings on city properties.
