DENVER — Some of the country's most prominent Conservatives are gathering in Denver this weekend for the 10th annual Western Conservative Summit.

The Western Conservative Summit is a two-day conclave founded 10 years ago by the Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood. It's billed as the largest gathering of conservatives outside the Washington, D.C., Beltway.

The theme of this year's conference is freedom of religion and the First Amendment.

Ahead of the event, Kyle Clark had conversations about the state of conservatism in Colorado with three Republicans who don't always agree on policy and tactics: State Representative Mark Baisley of Roxborough Park, columnist Mario Nicolais, and 9NEWS political expert Kelly Maher.

The event kicked off on Friday with speakers, workshops, book signings and the first high-profile evening session.

Colorado Senator Cory Gardner spoke for about 20 minutes Friday night.

Even though the summit has a planned "immigration and border" workshop Saturday, his comments on the topic were brief, focusing primarily on speaking up.

"We will not be bullied into not wearing the American flag," Gardner said. "We will not be bullied into being afraid of supporting our law enforcement community. We will not be afraid to protect our border. And not bullied to giving up our faith and right to worship as we see fit. We will not be bullied into being silent."

Gardner also talked about everything from socialism to health care, saying that instead of focusing on government-run health care the focus should be elsewhere - like on caring for veterans.

The other people who spoke Friday night were:

  • John Andrews
  • Johnnie Moore
  • Tom Fitton
  • Wil Armstrong
  • Dr. Donald Sweeting
  • Kevin Jackson
  • Under 30 Speech Winner
  • Charlie Hurt
  • Dave Kubal
  • Rep. Ralph Norman (SC-05)
  • Rep. Doug Lamborn (CO-05)
  • Rep. Paul Gosar (AZ-04)
  • Charlie Kirk
  • Donald Trump Jr.

The summit also had a first when Governor Jared Polis spoke earlier today. Polis is the first Democratic governor to speak at the summit.
