Colorado GOP Sen. Cory Gardner’s wife received a text message with a video attachment showing a beheading, a spokesperson for the senator confirmed to 9NEWS.
Gardner’s spokesperson said someone also released the names and home addresses of Gardner's family members. U.S. Capitol Police are aware and involved, according to Gardner’s office.
The story was originally reported by Fox News and Gardner’s spokesperson would not elaborate beyond confirming the accuracy of Fox News’ reporting.
The claim of a threatening message comes to light on the heels of Gardner's 'yes' vote helping to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Gardner's team sent out a press release on Friday indicating the senator would vote for Kavanaugh.
The release included a quote from Gardner where he said he took in as much information as possible during the confirmation process, including reading and re-reading transcripts during committee hearings.
Kavanaugh was sworn in Saturday and is expected to begin work as an Associate Justice on Tuesday.
He was confirmed 50-48 after a lengthy battle over allegations of sexual misconduct from his time as a high school and college student.
Gardner called victimized women who come forward "brave and courageous" in a press release. He encouraged listening more to victims of abuse, assault and violence. He also said lengthy background checks and FBI investigations did nothing to corroborate the story of any woman who accused Kavanaugh of misconduct.
Gardner's office declined to discuss the details of the message they claim his wife’s received or the 'doxing,' or posting of private information (like phone numbers, names and addresses) to the internet.
