It might be the off-season, but ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin is not slowing down.

All this week on 9NEWS Mornings, we’re highlighting young people in Colorado who are Crushin’ It. Catch Matt Renoux’s story about Mikaela Shiffrin on Tuesday on 9NEWS at 6 a.m.

SUMMIT COUNTY - Mikaela Shiffrin has wrapped up a ski season like no other, doing things on the snow no ski racer male or female has ever done and at 24, her run is just getting started.

Shiffrin, a Colorado resident and U.S. Ski Team racer, has spent her life on top of mountains. Now she’s on top of her game.

”I think a lot of things happened this season that I never foresaw,” Shiffrin said.

Shiffrin has already earned two Olympic gold medals and a silver. This past racing season, she grabbed titles in the tech events of the slalom and giant slalom, and earned a speed title in the Super G. She also took home the overall World Cup title and won 17 races overall – something no ski racer has ever done.

In her career, Shiffrin has a total of 60 World Cup wins. And let’s emphasize this again: she’s only 24.

“I was skiing well in slalom, I was skiing well in GS, I was skiing well in super G, so part of it was getting my mental game figured out and enjoy it a little more,” Shiffrin said.

It’s a lot of winning – and it has historic prize money to go with it. Men and women get equal prize money in ski racing, and Shiffrin has become the first ski racer of any gender to earn more than $1 million in a season.

Shiffrin is back home in Colorado and has taken some time to rest … but not that much time.

If you follow Shiffrin on social media, you’ll see it wasn’t long into the offseason before she was working with sponsors, back in the gym and already back on snow for training camps in California.

“It’s part of the job and if I’m not going to do it, someone else will,” Shiffrin said. “It’s satisfying. You see yourself making mini gains every day."

This is, of course, to set up another season of racing and another chance to crush it.

“Stay the course and keep doing what I love,” Shiffrin said.
