GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Do your animals run and hide when they hear fireworks? If so, your pet likely suffers from noise aversion, also commonly known as noise anxiety or noise phobia.
Nearly half of dogs in the United States suffer from noise issues. When a dog goes through this, its similar to a panic attack in humans.
Veterinarian Angelica Dimock from the Animal Humane Society stopped by with these suggestions to help your pets get through this upcoming scary fireworks season.
- Get your pets accustomed to the sounds of fireworks or thunderstorms by playing recordings of these sounds before the big day.
- Minimize your pet’s exposure to the sound of fireworks by creating a “safe haven” for them.
- There are prescription medications and nutraceuticals that have been proven effective in consultation with your veterinarian
