North High School athletes get surprise, encouragement from the Rockies

They are part of a program called "Reviving Baseball In the Inner Cities" (RBI) whose mission is to increase participation in baseball in minorities.

DENVER — The North High School varsity softball and baseball teams got a surprise on Friday. Tickets to the Rockies playoff game against the Brewers on Sunday.

“I wasn’t expecting this at all,” said senior infielder Seth Lucero. “I've been to Rockies games where it’s about 80 percent full but I know these playoff games are just going to be wild and it’s going to be rowdy so I’m pretty excited.”

It’s a playoff game both teams can’t wait to see.

“It’s exciting, it’s cool,” said varsity softball player Melina Mora, “I get to look back and be like ‘hey, I was there’.”

Both teams are part of a program called "Reviving Baseball In the Inner Cities" (RBI) whose mission is to increase participation in baseball in minorities. The athletes thought they were going to hear encouragement from former Rockies outfielder Cory Sullivan but got something else instead.

“I was only expecting one camera here so definitely a shock,” said Lucero.

“I’ve never been to one and I’m really excited to go,” said freshman Coen North.

The surprise was a gift from the Rockies for all the hard work both teams did this season.

“We just got done with our third back-to-back city title so we’re doing pretty well as a program,” said Lucero.

It's milestone these student-athletes will never forget.

I think it’s a great way to show North’s history and just how far we’ve come as a program and as a school and it’s definitely been special for us,” said Lucero.

The girls' softball team will throw out the first pitch in Sunday's NLDS game and the boy’s baseball team will pitch Monday if there is a game four.
