The Aurora Police Department called what occurred a "heartbreaking accident."

KUSA — The Aurora Police Department has launched an investigation after a mother said she accidentally struck her 1-year-old child while backing out of her driveway in Aurora Friday morning.

In a follow-up news release, the department called what occurred a "heartbreaking accident."

The mother met police officers at around 10:10 a.m. at the Shell Gas Station at South Buckley Road and East Alameda Parkway after the incident, according to a news release from Aurora police.

She had driven there after loading her child into her car near her home at South Uravan Street and East Kentucky Avenue and immediately calling 911 and heading to the hospital, police said.

At the direction of the dispatcher, police said she pulled into the gas station and met with first responders, who administered aid until an ambulance could arrive.

The child ultimately died at the hospital, police said.

Lt. Jad Lanigan with the Aurora Police Department said investigators are not releasing the gender of the child.

Detectives will determine if criminal charges are appropriate in the incident.
