Four hundred bookstores nationwide — several in Colorado — celebrate Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday, April 28. Living up to their “independent” aspect, each one plans its own way to celebrate. Every store is unique and independent, and every party is different.

But in addition to authors, live music, cupcakes, scavenger hunts, kids events, art tables, readings, barbecues, contests, and other fun stuff, there are exclusive books and literary items that you can only get on that day. Not before. Not after. Not online.

The Tattered Cover's four metro Denver stores plan activities, exclusive, limited-edition products and giveaways.

BookBar in Denver plans sangria and food specials, hourly book-prizes, special guests, sugar cookies for your kids, food-samples, gardening the patio and more!

At the Boulder Book Store, which the trade publication, Publisher’s Weeklyrecently named the best independent Bookstore of the Year in the country, there are crafts, snacks, drinks, games and more from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The kids’ party is from 1 to 3 p.m., Harry Potter Trivia at 1:30 p.m. and the adult party from 3 yo 5 p.m., with a 4 p.m. viewing of the videos that helped garner that national honor. Also customers get 10% off everything in the store all day.

Other participating indie bookstores in Colorado are 32nd Avenue Books, Toys & Gifts in Denver, Old Firehouse Books in Fort Collins, Macdonald Bookshop in Estes Park, Bookworm of Edwards and NextPage in Frisco.
