'Significant snowfall' keeps Mount Evans Highway closed

CDOT had hoped to get it partially open by Wednesday but that was delayed to snowfall earlier this week.

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, Colo. — Crews from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) are working to get clear the Mount Evans Highway but said on Wednesday that it remained closed due to significant snowfall in the last week.

Their goal is to get the highway partially opened to Summit Lake by the end of the week, but, of course, that's dependent on the weather.

If you hadn’t made the drive yet, the Mt. Evans Scenic Byway is the highest paved road in North America, climbing to the 14,264-foot summit of one of the most prominent peaks on the Front Range.

The road typically opens by Memorial Day but that was delayed due to an abundance of snow this winter. Late last week, CDOT said it would open partially on May 29, but snowfall this week delayed that again.

Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park also remains closed due to weather. There's no word yet on when it will open, just when "when weather and conditions permit".

The road connects Estes Park and Grand Lake. Every year, Rocky Mountain National Park snowplow operators begin plowing Trail Ridge Road in mid-April.

The earliest the road has opened was on May 7, 2002; the latest June 26, 1943, according to a release from the park.
