BROOMFIELD - Kids who are barely old enough to learn multiplication are getting an important lesson in generosity.
At just 8 years old, two boys in Broomfield are committed to raising money to help kids close to their own age. Each year, Jagger Herrington and Finn McBride donate to St. Baldrick's Foundation, a non-profit group that helps fund the fight against childhood cancer.
The boys' interests were piqued by their dads who separately got involved several years ago. Jagger's dad, Josh, says he first started wanting to help during his time as a paramedic when he responded to a call involving a girl battling the disease. It's now his duty to instill similar values in his son, he said.
"We believe in it," Josh said. "It's important that -- me as a dad -- I teach him that it's important to give back."
Both boys' dads said their sons are always scheming to raise more money for the foundation. The kids are on a team with five other kids and their dads. Last year, they raised around $55,000. The year before, they racked up close to $61,000.
"It's a pretty emotional moment when you kind of see all of the hard work that they've done," said Andy McBride, Finn's dad.
Aside from just raising money, the boys do something else to remind them what they're working toward. Each year, around Halloween, the kids start growing their hair out as long as they can. Then, the day before St. Patrick's Day, they shave it all off.
"The medicine that the people with cancer have, it makes all their hair fall off and then people might stare at them," Finn said. "So, we shave our heads so they're not the only ones who don't feel embarrassed."
"It's impressive to watch a kid have that sort of compassion," Andy said about the boys. "It leaves me speechless."
