State officials are warning Coloradans about heightened fire danger this week, specifically pointing to Thursday as one of the most dangerous days of the state's entire fire season.
"Low relative humidity, high winds, and spiking heat will bring extreme fire danger to Colorado, specifically along the Front Range and the southern portion of Colorado," the press release from Colorado Division of Fire Prevention & Control says.
It's a warning we hear every year - and with several human-caused fires this season already destroying property, it's one we need to hear as often as possible.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff has issued a ban on all open fires and burning as a result of the dry conditions. The fire ban includes Cherry Creek State Park and the City of Centennial.
Here's a list of handy tips to always remember as spring comes in Colorado:
- Don't mow or trim grass on windy days
- Make sure campfires are completely extinguished - if you can't touch it, it isn't safe to leave! Make sure your fire is OUT!
- Never pull your vehicle over in dry grass (seriously!)
- Make sure cigarette butts are properly extinguished and never, ever, EVER toss them out your car window
- Off-road vehicles and chainsaws should be equipped with approved and recently updated spark arrestors
- Be careful with welding equipment and any open flames outdoors.
