ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. — A child was injured in a pursuit and crash involving Denver Police early Sunday morning.
Denver Police said that just before 4 a.m., paramedics were flagged down by people in an SUV near 45th Avenue and North Peoria Street. The driver was standing outside of the SUV, but when the ambulance stopped, he got in the SUV and sped off.
The ambulance's crew radioed out that the SUV had suspected gunshot damage to the driver's side window, police said. Officers located the SUV near 45th Avenue and North Havana Street, police said. Officers tried to pull the SUV driver over, but the driver sped off and a pursuit was authorized, a DPD spokesperson said.
An officer performed a PIT maneuver, which caused the SUV to crash on Pecos Street at U.S. 36.
The SUV's driver, a man, ran from the scene, police said. He later walked into a hospital and was contacted by police.
Police said there were six others in the SUV. All of the SUV's occupants were taken to hospitals to be evaluated, police said.
A child in the SUV, who police said was not in a car seat, suffered serious injuries in the crash.
A woman in the SUV was treated for an arm injury that reportedly happened during a prior altercation in the area of 17th Avenue and Alton Street in Aurora, a Denver Police spokesman said.
The SUV's driver told police a suspect or suspects at 17th and Alton fired gunshots at their vehicle, DPD said.
Investigators with Denver Police are working with Aurora Police to look into the altercation, according to DPD.
