Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband service coming to Denver later this year

Residents of Denver with a 5G-enabled device will soon be able to experience the benefits of the new technology.

The Mile High City is one of 20 cities in the country that will roll out Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband Service later this year.

The new service promises mobile speeds of up to 1 gbps, low latency gaming, the ability to download movies in a matter of seconds, and high definition video calling.

“Denver getting 5G Ultra Wideband service this year is going to put us on the leading edge of this new technology, and will be a big boost to our residents and businesses once it’s rolled out here,” said Denver Mayor Michael Hancock. “As we look to deploy more smart city programs to improve quality of life in our neighborhoods, 5G is an exciting opportunity to expand those efforts to better connect our residents to the improved services we’re working on.”

5G Ultra Wideband uses new radio technology and device hardware to deliver advanced capabilities to consumers and businesses, said Verizon in a news release.

The 5G network service is currently only offered in Chicago and Minneapolis.

“Today’s announcement is just the start for Denver and we’re excited to bring the game-changing power of 5G Ultra Wideband service to consumers, business and government agencies in 2019,” said Kyle Malady, Verizon’s chief technology officer.

Verizon said the 5G Ultra Wideband service will be built off of existing networks and will use Verizon’s 4G LTE Network as a jumping off point. The service will only be available on 5G-enabled smartphones.

Other cities chosen for the service this year include: Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Des Moines, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Little Rock, Memphis, Phoenix, Providence, Salt Lake City, San Diego and Washington, D.C.

Verizon has not said exactly when in 2019 the new service will launch in Denver.
