Ron Mitchell, who covered stories for 9NEWS from 1969 to 1995, died at home this morning.
His wife Judie told 9NEWS Ron died of natural causes. He was 75.
When Ron started, 9NEWS also operated KBTR Radio, so he worked first in radio, then as a TV sports anchor, and then as a news reporter and anchor.
According to Judie Mitchell, legendary 9NEWS anchor and manager Carl Akers made the decision to assign Ron to the TV news staff.
Ron remained connected to 9NEWS even after he left the station in 1995, visiting us as recently as March 2 for the retirement celebration for 9NEWS anchor Mark Koebrich.
He was also extremely active with the Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library, which was “established to promote and facilitate the pursuit of stamp collecting as a hobby at all levels…” according to the organization’s website. He was also an active member of the Broadcast Pioneers of Colorado.
Ron leaves behind a large extended family and an even larger circle of friends from his work in the media and his efforts in the community.
