Fort Carson soldier killed in Iraq in 'non-combat related incident'

Spc. Michael T. Osorio was from Horseshoe Bend, Idaho. He had been at Fort Carson since May 2018.

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. — A soldier stationed at the Fort Carson army installation near Colorado Springs was killed in a 'non-combat related incident' in Iraq, according to a release from the Department of Defense. 

Spc. Michael T. Osorio, 20, died Tuesday. 

Osorio was from Horseshoe Bend, Idaho and was serving in Taji, Iraq supporting Operation Inherent Resolve at the time of his death, the release says. 

He joined the Army in July 2017 and had been stationed at Fort Carson since May 2018. 

Osorio was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd ABCT, 4th Inf. Div.

"The 3rd Armored Brigade would like to extend its deepest condolences to the friends, family, and fellow Soldiers of Spc. Michael Osorio," said Col. Michael J. Simmering, commander of that division in the release. "Spc. Osorio’s dedication to the mission and his unit made him a valued member of the Iron Brigade. His loss will be felt throughout our formations."

The exact cause of Osorio's death is not clear at this time. The Department of Defense said that the incident is under investigation.
