DENVER - This summer, you can raise money for cancer research and clinical trials by going for a swim at one of Denver's most popular reservoirs.

Swim Across America, a nonprofit that raises money by holding open water charity swims across the county, is coming to Denver for this first time in August.

It's basically a charity run, but for swimmers.

Up to 300 people can register for the event at Chatfield Reservoir and are then required to raise at least $400 by the day of the event.

Swimmers can choose whether they want to swim a half-mile, a one-mile or a 5k course.

There's also a short, fun swim called the "Balloon Splash" for both kids and less experienced swimmers who still want to participate. There isn't a fundraising requirement for the Balloon Splash.

Those who attend will also get the chance to meet Olympians who will be at the event, showing their support and signing autographs.

Missy Franklin, Kara Lynn Joyce, Elizabeth Beisel, Klete Keller and George DiCarlo are some of the 15 Olympians who will be at the Denver swim.

The event was inspired by a 1985 Run Across America event that raised over $1 million for cancer research. The first swim was held in 1987 and Swim Across America has since raised over $75 million and currently holds 18 open water events each year.

According to their website, money raised at Swim Across America events is donated to various cancer research institutes and organizations including Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins Medicine, Mass General Hospital for Children Cancer Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Moffitt Cancer Center.

For the next four years, all of the money raised from SAA Denver will benefit Children's Hospital Colorado. It will fund cancer research and clinical trials at the hospital.
