Help raise money for cancer by forming a Relay For Life team

Each relay lasts a total of between six and 12 hours.

DENVER — This summer teams around the country will walk to help raise money for cancer in the Relay For Life.

Relay For Life is the largest fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

Each event lasts a total of between six and 12 hours. During that time, members of each team take turns walking around a track or other path. At least one member of the team is asked to be on the path at all times during the event.

The team members who are not walking can enjoy the festival-type atmosphere that includes playing games, participating in exercise classes, contests and theme laps and enjoying food.

At night Luminaria are lit along the path as a symbol of remembrance of those lost and a symbol of hope to those affected by cancer.

The idea of the continuous event is a symbolic one: cancer does not sleep and for one night, neither will the participants of the event.

Cancer survivors are also honored at each event by walking the first lap.

Those who want to be a part of the Relay For Life can sign up to be a team captain, join a team, volunteer at an event, donate to the cause or dedicate a Luminaria to someone who has been touched by cancer.

This summer, there are almost 20 different Relay for Life events scheduled around Colorado so far.
