Kathleen Novak: 2003 9NEWS Leader of the Year

Kathie Novac, a native of Colorado, earned her Master of Science in Management from the University of Colorado at Denver, and has an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Kathie Novac, a native of Colorado, earned her Master of Science in Management from the University of Colorado at Denver, and has an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Colorado at Boulder. As an undergraduate, Kathie was a member of the Presidents Leadership Class and a Boettcher Scholar.

She is currently a Special Member of the Graduate Faculty for the Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Colorado at Denver, an affiliate faculty member at Regis University's School for Professional Studies, and has taught classes at Front Range Community College. Kathie has worked in private, public, and not-for-profit sector organizations.

In June of 1991, Kathie was appointed to fill and un-expired term as a Ward 1 Council Member of the Northglenn City Council, and was elected to two four-year terms in 1992 and 1996. In November of 1999, she ran and was elected to a four-year term as a Ward 4 Council Member, and in November of 2001, was elected Mayor.

She has served on numerous council comities and is active in the National League of Cities, participating on the Leadership Training Council for the Leadership Training Institute for many years, serving as chair in 1998. She has served as the Chair of the 2002 National League of Cities Conference Planning Committee, and is serving on the Conference Evaluation Committee and the Finance, Administration and Intergovernmental Relations Steering and Policy Committees. Kathie was elected to serve on the Board of Directors for the National League of Cities in December 2002. She ahs also served as chair of the Mayors and Council Members Section of the Colorado Municipal League for two years, and as a chair of the Strategic Visioning Committee. Ms. Novac recently contributed to Working Together: A Guide for Elected and Appointed Officials, published by the International City/County Management Association and the National League of Cities. In addition, she has been active in many local civic and community organizations to encourage collaborative governance initiatives within the Metro area.

Recent awards include "Businesswoman of the Year," awarded by the MetroNorth Chamber of Commerce and "Excellence in Teaching Award" from Regis University. Kathie is listed in Who's Who of American Women, and was awarded on American Marshall Memorial Fellowship for travel in Summer 2002.

Kathie and her husband, Warren, share their how with their five children and a myriad of pets.
