One of the most controversial figures in the Colorado State House is out.

State Rep. Gordon Klingenschmitt (R-Colorado Springs) has lost his bid for a senate seat to challenger Bob Gardner, who won handily with 62 percent of the vote with nearly all precincts reporting.

Klingenschmitt garnered around 38 percent of the vote in Tuesday night’s primary election.

The controversial state representative who is also known by his alter-ego “Doctor Chaps” gained notoriety for various controversial comments including ones about Muslims and gays that even grew ire from fellow conservatives.

Gardner is a veteran state representative who served eight years in the house.

He is considered more moderate than Klingenschmitt.
