A Colorado company is the leading funder of the most expensive ballot measure in the country this election year.
Nearly $100 million has been spent in California to oppose Proposition 8, a measure that would cap dialysis clinic profits at 15 percent in the state. Leading the way is DaVita Inc. (NYSE: DVA), the Denver-based kidney-care provider, which has contributed nearly $60 million opposing the bill. Massachusetts-based Fresenius Kidney Care (NYSE: FMS) is the No. 2 contributor toward the proposal’s opposition at $28 million.
About $20 million has been spent in support of the bill.
The proposal ranks No. 1 in the country for dollars spent in opposition, according to Ballotpedia, and No. 4 for dollars spent in support. DaVita's contributions are just shy of all opposition contributions for California's Proposition 10, which is the No. 2 most expensive ballot measure, at $59.5 million. Prop 10 deals with local rent controls in California.
