St. Paul considers pet store ban on mill-bred animals

Alternatives to mills are adopting homeless animals or seeking out responsible breeders.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - "How much is that doggie in the window?"

Animals sold in pet stores are sometimes bred by mills for purchase, but that might not be an option in St. Paul sometime soon.

The city may adopt an ordinance prohibiting pet stores from selling pets from puppy and kitten mills. The ordinance would still allow stores to host adoption events with animal shelters.

St. Paul would not be alone in this effort. The first city in Minnesota to adopt a humane pet store ordinance was Roseville. This spring, Eden Prairie became the second.

There are no pet stores in St. Paul that buy and sell from commercial breeding facilities.

Alternatives to mills are adopting homeless animals or seeking out responsible breeders.

A public hearing is being held on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at St. Paul City Hall on the 3rd floor. There will be a brief testimony and discussion among the council.
