ARVADA – Jamie Johnson admits he's a little obsessed with pumpkins. During the peak of pumpkin growing season, Johnson's wife, Amber, wears a shirt that says "pumpkin widow."
"It's pretty funny," Amber said.
Big pumpkins can lead to big accomplishments. Jamie's pumpkin grew to a mass of more than 500 pounds. But, next to a different pumpkin, it looks tiny. That's because the other pumpkin, grown by Jamie's friend, tipped the scales at more than 1,200 pounds.
The Johnsons get a carver to turn their giant pumpkins into massive jack o' lanterns. But the 1,200 pound pumpkin will make a final public appearance before meeting its demise. It will be featured at Vanderhoof Elementary School's Pumpkin Splat in Arvada on Saturday, Nov. 1 from 1 to 2 p.m. Kids can bring their own pumpkins to get splattered.
