A man was cited after officials with the Denver Zoo say he jumped a fence in an attempt to touch a sleeping tiger.

Police say on March 18, a man climbed a public barrier fence of the new tiger exhibit. Despite his effort, zoo officials say the man never made it to the exhibit and neither he, nor the tiger, were harmed.

Originally, police misstated this happened in the lion exhibit. Sunday, the zoo clarified it was the tiger exhibit.

Matthew Swearingen, 34, was cited for criminal trespassing.

In light of this incident, the zoo says it's assessing if anything needs to be done to "discourage this illegal behavior from happening again."
