KUSA – When the Denver Broncos signed free-agent punter Marquette King, they sent a message to current punter Riley Dixon his services would no longer be needed.

To the Broncos’ credit, they delivered that message in person.

After the King signing, Broncos head coach Vance Joseph sat down with Dixon face to face and told him he would be moved from the team.

Dixon bypassed the first week of the Broncos’ offseason workout program as he waited in limbo. His status is now certain after he was dealt Friday to the New York Giants in return for a conditional, seventh-round draft pick in 2019.

It’s not much for a punter who was a seventh-round selection out of Syracuse in 2016 and has two full seasons of NFL experience. But it’s better than waiving Dixon and getting nothing back.

The Giants and at least two other teams were interested in Dixon but not much was offered in part because this draft includes a strong class of punters led by Alabama’s JK Scott of Mullen High School.

Dixon had a terrific rookie season for the Broncos, finishing 9th in the league with a 41.3-yard net average, although he slumped to 22nd in his second season with a 40.2-yard net.

King is considered a top three punting talent in the league in that he has both a booming a leg and is adept at pinning opponents inside the 10.

Joseph leads coaching retreat

Joseph, his coaching staff, and their wives are taking a retreat at The Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs this weekend.

The coaches listened to a speaker on leadership, teaching and instruction on Friday morning, played some golf in the afternoon and were to compete in a bowling tournament pitting the coaches against their wives in the evening.

The retreat concludes after Sunday brunch and the coaches will be back to help general manager John Elway finalize the Broncos’ draft plans on Monday morning.
