Colorado was well represented at this year's Boston Marathon.

Colorado native Tyler Pennel came in fourth on Monday with a time of 2 hours 18 minutes and 57 seconds.

Pennel grew up in Golden before moving to North Carolina.

He's not new to success like this: Pennel was the 2014 U.S. Marathon champion and placed fifth in the Olympic trials two years later.

Even still, he says his fourth place Boston Marathon finish took a moment to sink in.

"It wasn't until I got back to the tent I was excited. I knew I'd run well, but not that well I guess," Pennel told 9NEWS via video call on Monday.

As soon as Pennel finished, he became a spectator to cheer on his girlfriend, Jessica Chichester, who she finished fifth for the women.

American Desi Linden became the first American woman to win the race since 1985.
