ENGLEWOOD — Here is the timeline of a Broncos’ roster transaction.
At 12:06 p.m. Wednesday, Broncos receiver Emmanuel Sanders went down while making a cut on a shallow in-route during a routine passing drill with no defense. He was helped off the field and into the locker room.
By 12:20 p.m. the Broncos medical team had determined Sanders had suffered a torn Achilles. The Broncos didn’t wait for an MRI exam to confirm. They had to act quickly.
At 1:20 p.m. practice ended. Offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave walked off the field and notified one of John Elway’s personnel men he had coached receiver Andre Holmes in Oakland for two seasons in 2015-16. Musgrave knew Holmes was on the waiver wire as he was cut Tuesday by the Buffalo Bills.
At 1:55 p.m.— five minutes before the waiver claiming period expired – the Broncos put in a claim for Holmes, according to a team source.
At 2 p.m., the waiver wire expired, and the Broncos were awarded Holmes.
Any team who is awarded a player off waivers has one hour to make a corresponding roster move. At 3 p.m., the Broncos placed Sanders on season-ending injured reserve.
Holmes entered this season with six years of NFL experience. He had 115 catches for 1,589 yards, and 15 touchdowns – or 115 catches, 1,589 yards and 15 touchdowns than the combined Broncos’ existing receiver core of Courtland Sutton, DaeSean Hamilton, Tim Patrick and River Cracraft had coming into this season.
