The high school winter sports season is a wrap, but this week's Prep Rally Honor Roll highlights the top plays from the basketball and hockey state tournaments from the past seven days.
Starting off the countdown at No. 5 is the Kit Carson Wildcats. The girls' basketball team won a back-to-back 1A state title and finished with its second consecutive undefeated season. The seniors on the team are also going out on top -- having won 98 of their past 100 games.
The No. 4 play is a buzzer beater in the 3A Final Four boys' basketball game between Lutheran and Sterling. Lutheran's Peter Gibas hit a jumper with two seconds on the clock to hand Sterling its first loss of the season and to help his team advance to the championship game.
The state ice hockey champion Regis Jesuit claimed the No. 3 play of the week. Kale Lone scored an absolute beauty to put the Raiders up 2-0 on Valor Christian, and his team would hold on to win their second straight state championship.
Number two in the Prep Rally Honor Roll returns to the hardwood in the Lutheran vs. Sterling Final Four match-up. Bodie Hume missed a long three-pointer for the Tigers, but hustled to keep it in bounds before getting it back and finishing off with a monster dunk. A great second effort with an even better finish deserves to be recognized.
But this week's top play won Longmont High School the 4A boys' basketball state championship. Junior Oakley Dehning -- who also happens to be the starting quarterback of the Trojans' football team -- hit a long three pointer with 12.8 seconds for the game winner. Longmont would hang on to defeat Lewis Palmer 62-59, earning their first boys basketball title since 1942.
