KUSA — As we approach the midway mark of the regular football season, our Prep Rally Honor Roll candidates keep turning up the heat.
Kicking us off was a battle between two of the top programs in the state -- 5A's No. 2 Valor Christian and 4A's No. 1 Pine Creek. The latter's Max Lofy got our Honor Roll started with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, helping Pine Creek tie things up with Valor.
This week's No. 4 play was a winning interception. No. 1 Cherry Creek and No. 4 Pomona were locked in a tie after regulation, so they went to overtime. The Bruins scored first, to take a 7-point advantage. The Panthers scored a touchdown and, rather than go for the tie, went for a two-point conversion and win. But Creek's Myles Purchase came up with the interception on the goal line, securing the win for the state's top-ranked team.
This week's No. 3 play came from the 9Preps Game of the Week between Mead and Roosevelt. Mead senior Easton Willyard blocked a punt for the Mavs, and Jay Olson recovered the ball and took it in for a touchdown to secure his team's win over the Roughriders.
A trick play took home our No. 2 spot in this week's Honor Roll. Regis Jesuit quarterback Nicco Marchiol started with the ball, and after two end arounds, he ended with it in the end zone for a Raiders TD.
But this week's top play was sent into us by a viewer. The Fossil Ridge Sabercats took the lead over the Overland Trailblazers on a beautiful pass from Shjon Mosser to Niles Tilley in the back of the end zone. Tilley somehow managed to drag both toes in bounds to secure the touchdown.
