Lutheran captures 3A volleyball state championship

The Lions claimed their first title since 2012, and first in Class 3A, on Saturday night at Denver Coliseum.

DENVER — Perhaps one of the biggest storylines of the 2018 volleyball state championships was how strange it was not seeing Eaton in the Class 3A title match.

The Reds had won it all the past five straight years, and all but one since 2011. Maybe the only ones it wasn't a surprise to was Lutheran, who finished as runner-up in 2017 after getting swept by Eaton.

This year, however, they got revenge by knocking out the Reds in a five-set thriller in the semifinals in route to winning the 2018 state title with a (25-16, 25-20, 14-25, 25-11) victory over Colorado Springs Christian.

It is Lutheran's third title in program history and first since going back-to-back in Class 2A in 2011-12.

"It's unspeakable. I'm speechless ... just so happy," senior Abby Akers said. "I'm just so blessed to be here.I could never dream of it like this. Amazing -- just, amazing."

The Lions entered the state playoff bracket as the No. 1 seed. Colorado Springs Christian was No. 6 and Eaton was No. 8.

Lutheran had a 27-2 overall record, losing only to Faith Christian and Eaton in the opening round.

Colorado Springs Christian finishes as the 2A runner-up with a 22-5 record.
