A strong second half powered the Mustangs to a win in the 5A Metro West League opener.
The Ralston Valley High School football team defeated Arvada West 42-13 on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018.

ARVADA — What better way to kick off league play than with a rivalry game.

Ralston Valley and Arvada West each could make a run in the competitive 5A Metro West League this season, and clashed Thursday night at the North Area Athletic Complex.

Both teams entered the game with 4-1 records through non-league matchups, but it was the Mustangs who kept it rolling with a 42-13 victory over the Wildcats.

A strong second half that entailed outscoring Arvada West 29-7 after halftime, and forcing four turnovers is what powered No. 7-ranked Ralston Valley. The Mustangs recovered a fumble on the Wildcats' first play from scrimmage which led to their initial scoring drive.

The other three turnovers came by interceptions, two of which were reeled in by Ben Takata and another by Thomas Harries.

Offensively, Ralston Valley was led by quarterback Walker Brickle, who threw for three touchdowns. Caleb Rillos was on the receiving end of two of them, from 13 and 23 yards, while AJ Jergensen caught the other on a 34-yard passing touchdown.

The Mustangs also presented a strong run game as Jergensen added a touchdown on the ground. Brad Roberts and Chase Wilson had one rushing score each, as well.

Arvada West's two touchdowns came on a 1-yard run from Tony Cass and a 25-yard pass from Johnny Krutsch to Nick Nuhfer.

Ralston Valley (5-1, 1-0 MWL) will play Mullen (3-2) next Friday, while Arvada West (4-2, 0-1 MWL) will face No. 6 Pomona (3-2) next Thursday. Both games will be at NAAC.
