Results: 2017 State Spirit

The Castle View co-ed cheer team celebrates after its routine on Saturday, December 9. The Sabercats took 1st in the 4A/5A co-ed division for the fourth straight year.

After two days of State Spirit at the Denver Coliseum, twelve schools have been named state champions.

While a few programs were relatively new to the throne, many were repeat winners.

For starters, in 2A poms, Vail Christian won its seventh straight state title, further cementing the group's place as one of the best dynasties in all of high school sports.

Speaking of dynasties, go ahead and put the Ponderosa jazz team in that same category. The Mustangs won their fourth straight championship Saturday night. Perhaps more impressively, Ponderosa is now tied for the most spirit state titles in Colorado history, with 11 total now.

Castle View also claimed its fourth consecutive state championship victory in the 4A/5A co-ed cheer division. The Sabercats beat out Mountain Vista and Vista Ridge for the first place trophy.

The other co-ed cheer state victor also has quite the resume now. St. Mary's won its third straight state title in the 2A/3A division with a score of 77.65 to overcome Coal Ridge.

Over in poms, ThunderRidge won its first ever title in 5A with a score of 94.23, just edging 2nd place Grandview.

Wheat Ridge repeated as a champ in class 4A, while Bayfield avenged last year's runner-up finish with a state title in 3A.

In cheer meanwhile, Cherokee Trail knocked off powerhouse Rock Canyon -- who had claimed three of the last four state championships -- in class 5A.

4A Cheer was so close that it came down to a tiebreaker. Both Valor Christian and Thompson Valley finished with the same score of 83.05, yet the Valor Eagles won because of a higher average score from the cheer judges. So, for the second straight year, Valor Christian beat out Thompson Valley for the gold hardware.

The Academy won the school's first state title in 3A cheer, while Highland Repeated as the first place squad in 2A.

Rounding out the list of twelve state champions is Broomfield High School, which captured the hip hop title with a score of 87.283 to get past Eaglecrest and Overland.
