DENVER — Before the delays and cancellations this week, we put a bow on the high school state hockey season, and it was not without an instant classic!
Fort Collins and Valor Christian were both fighting for their first-ever state championships, and their fight was evident in a five-overtime game.
Sam Simon was the star, with 84 saves for Fort Collins, but he couldn't get his stopper on the final puck. Valor's Evan Pahos put the puck around Simon's left side with 2:12 left in the fifth overtime to score the winning goal.
Carly Dilworth, a senior at Denver South High School, was a finalist for the American Family Insurance three point contest. Four of the best sharpshooting girls and boys in the country were pinned against each other in a vote to see who would be shooting triples live in Atlanta for March Madness.
Dilworth won her first round and advanced to the final vote. A malfunction in the voting process occurred when she was down less than one percentage point last Friday. AmFam extended the vote into this week, when Dilworth won the majority of the vote and the contest.
The NCAA announced its March Madness would be canceled Thursday, eliminating the three-point contest.
