Three of Colorado's own women's soccer players commence competition in the 2016 Summer Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil tomorrow afternoon.
Janine Beckie, a Valor Christian graduate and forward for Canada's women's national team will face off against Australia in the opening round; while Mallory Pugh, Mountain Vista graduate, and Lindsey Horan, Golden graduate, face New Zealand.
Beckie started her career with the Valor Christian Eagles before continuing her soccer career with Texas Tech University and playing with the U-20 Canadian National Team. The forward was part of the U-20 team that played in the 2015 Pan American games in Toronto, Canada.
The 22-year-old has had 20 appearances for Canada, 13 starts, and 9 goals since 2015. The team has yet to lose a game since Beckie joined the team with an overall 13-0-6 record. Canada plays Australia in the first round.
Mallory Pugh and Lindsey Horan begin competition with the U.S. Women's National team against New Zealand tomorrow at 4p.m.
Pugh, one of the youngest players competing in Rio, recently graduated from Mountain Vista High School. The 18-year-old has been working her way to the national team since an early age and finally made her debut this year on January 23, where she also scored her first cap.
Lindsey Horan graduated from Golden High School in 2012, then continued her career as the first U.S. female women's soccer player to sign a professional contract out of high school. She signed with the Paris Saint-Germain club in France and recently returned to play for the Portland Thorns.
Horan has scored three goals in 20 appearances for the women's national team.
