Valor Christian football takes down Pine Creek

5A No. 2 Valor Christian knocks off 4A No. 1 Pine Creek in homecoming game Friday night.

The Eagle Trophy was on the line Friday night in Highlands Ranch when Valor Christian played host to visiting Pine Creek.

It was a marquee matchup billed with Valor as the No. 2 team in Class 5A and Pine Creek the top-ranked 4A squad. Both schools showed why they are among the best in their respective classes, but it was Valor that came out the victor with a 28-7 win.

The teams exchanged big plays throughout the first half. Valor Christian struck first in the opening quarter when quarterback Luke McCaffrey faked a handoff and bounced around the outside for a 35-yard rushing touchdown.

But Pine Creek was quick to respond. On the very next play, Max Lofy returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to tie the game, 7-7.

McCaffrey then added two more touchdowns in the second quarter, one a 29-yard toss to Gavin Sawchuk and another 5-yard rush. He finished the game with 272 passing yards, completing 20 of his 36 attempts, and had another 99 via rushing.

His top target was Kaiden Keefe, who reeled in 151 yards on eight receptions.

Valor Christian improves to 4-0 on the season, while Pine Creek falls to 3-1.
