On this day in sports: Rockies debut Mike Hampton

April 2, 2001: The Colorado Rockies showcased their newly-signed $120M pitcher on Opening Day.

DENVER — On today's "This Day in Sports" we look back on the Colorado Rockies opening day 19 years ago.

The club was debuting their newly-signed, $120 million pitcher Mike Hampton -- their huge off-season signing.

It was arguably Hampton's best performance in his two-year stint with the team. He threw 8 2/3 innings in an 8-0 shutout over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Hampton was traded to the Atlanta Braves after the 2002 season.
