USA TODAY — Entering the final year of his contract, Broncos tight end Jeff Heuerman needs to step up this season if he wants an extension.

The arrival of ex-Vikings quarterback Case Keenum could be good news for the fourth-year tight end. Last season, Kyle Rudolph (Minnesota’s No. 1 tight end) hauled in 57 receptions for 532 yards and eight touchdowns.

Denver would love to get that kind of production out of Heuerman this year. If he builds chemistry with Keenum, Heuerman could become one of the quarterback’s favorite targets.

So how is the chemistry between them?

“We were in the hot tub this morning together, watching some film,” Heuerman said with a laugh after practice Wednesday. “I’d say it’s pretty good.”

Heuerman noted that getting on the same page with Keenum has been one of his priorities this offseason.

“That’s a huge thing for a tight end, especially for guy like Case who used tight ends a lot in the past,” Heuerman said. “That’s what we’ve been working on and we’re excited.”

Heuerman owns 18 career receptions for 283 yards with two touchdown catches. He’ll look to build on those totals with Keenum.
