It's official: Broncos intercept naming rights at Sports Authority Field

A bankruptcy-court judge has approved the transfer of naming rights at Sports Authority Field at Mile High from the failed retail chain to the stadium's main tenant, the Denver Broncos.

A bankruptcy-court judge has approved the transfer of naming rights at Sports Authority Field at Mile High from the failed retail chain to the stadium's main tenant, the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos had proposed buying out the remaining five years of the contract, and the judge signed off on the plan Tuesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Delaware. The remaining contract has a price tag of about $19.9 million.

It's understood that the team's move is a holding action until a long-term naming rights deal can be worked out. For now, the Sports Authority name will stay on the stadium.

Some fans had hoped that the name would revert to Mile High Stadium, the moniker of the Broncos' pre-2001 home field. Others had proposed naming the stadium for the Broncos' ailing owner, Pat Bowlen.
