Polis coronavirus call draws a crowd

Colorado's Governor invited 57 organizations -- including bosses from Broncos and Rockies -- that deal with large crowds to discuss the COVID-19 outbreak.

DENVER — Calls came in from up and down the Front Range.

Representatives from the Colorado Springs Garden of the Gods to Loveland Ski Area to Elitch Gardens to Broncos CEO Joe Ellis to Rockies COO Greg Feasel all dialed in to the conference call led Friday afternoon by Governor Jared Polis to discuss the coronavirus pandemic.

Colorado’s Governor invited 57 organizations to the call in all, including people representing the Denver Zoo, Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), Red Rocks, Live Nation and the Denver Center for Performing Arts.

"The Governor had productive calls with a variety of stakeholders today including local venues and others to discuss steps the state is taking to protect the health and safety of Coloradans and how the organizations can be a partner in those efforts," a Governor’s spokesperson said in a statement. "Governor Polis discussed the guidance issued around gatherings of 250 or more people as well as other measures. He intends to keep this line of communication open as the situation evolves."

Per a source familar with the call, the sold-out Pepsi Center crowd for the Post Malone concert Thursday night that was heavily criticized in light of the COVID-19 outbreak did not come up.

Prior to the conference call, the Broncos and stadium district officials cancelled the Motocross event April 4 at Empower Field at Mile High and also postponed/cancelled the Monster Jam truck event that had been scheduled for April 18 at the stadium.

Each event drew crowds of about 40,000 last year.

Meanwhile, on the Broncos’ football side of operations, all scouts on the road returned home Friday and will not travel in the foreseeable future.

According to a team source, it was a skeleton crew of employees working at the stadium and only limited football personnel (including John Elway and Vic Fangio) were at the team’s UCHealth Training Center headquarters Friday as most employees did work from home.
