KUSA — The Colorado Avalanche acquired 2018 Stanley Cup champion and veteran defenseman Brooks Orpik and goaltender Philipp Grubauer from the Washington Capitals, in exchange for their second-round selection (47th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft.

Orpik is a 15-year NHL veteran with two Stanley Cup Championships (Pittsburgh Penguins 2008-09, Washington Capitals 2017-18).

The 37-year-old will be a big veteran presence on the blue line for a young Avs team. Orpik led the Capitals in blocked shots (168), and finished second on the team in hits (218) last season. Not known for making a big impact on the scoreboard, he had 10 points (0g, 10a) in 81 regular-season games and five points (1g, 4a) in 24 postseason contests.

Grubauer, 26, appeared in 35 regular-season games behind Capitals' starting goaltender Braden Holtby. The 6-foot-1, 191 net-minder finished last season with a 15-10-3 record in net with three shutouts.

He led all NHL goaltenders in goals-against average (1.93) and save percentage (.937) from Nov. 24 to the end of the season (min. 20 games).

The Rosenheim, Germany native was drafted by the Capitals in 2010 (round 10, 112 overall), and has played in six NHL seasons (85 NHL contests) with an overall record of 43-31-11.
