Snowboarder rescued from avalanche in closed area of Steamboat Resort

The person was fully conscious and breathing, a spokesperson for the resort said.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. — A snowboarder was rescued Sunday afternoon after being caught in an avalanche in closed terrain at Steamboat Resort.

Loryn Duke, Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation's spokesperson, said the closed terrain was not considered suitable for public skiing or snowboarding, but the area above terrain was open and not roped off, which is how the guest accessed the terrain.

The snowboarder was extricated, fully conscious and breathing, and taken to the hospital in good condition, Duke said.

The trails that are open are safe, and trails that are closed are closed for a reason, Duke said.

Ski Patrol Director John Kohnke told Steamboat Radio, “They didn’t do anything wrong as far as ducking a rope. They went to the end of a barrier and took such a hard traverse they got into the flats over there.”
