SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants have named Ty Blach as their Opening Day starter.

Blach, 27, will start on Thursday opposite of Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Blach is the first Giants pitcher to start Opening Day other than Madison Bumgarner since 2013. Bumgarner, who had surgery on his pitching hand, is expected to miss at least the first two months of the season.

"Obviously, the circumstances are tough losing Bum," Blach said on the Giants' website. "But it's an honor to be able to go out there and get that nod and give everything I've got."

Blach graduated from Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora and then played for Creighton University. A 2012 draft pick of the Giants, Blach made his major league debut in 2016.
