Arapahoe Basin was open for skiing on the 4th of July

Yes: You can (sometimes) ski on Independence Day in Colorado.

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. — Want to ski on the consummate summer holiday? Colorado is the place to be.

Arapahoe Basin announced it would be open for skiing and snowboarding on the Fourth of July. This was also the ski area’s last day of the 2018-2019 winter season. For real this time (even though A-Basin has pushed back its last day thanks to a snowy spring and summer).

For what it’s worth, the last time A-Basin was open on July 4 was in 2011. It’s impressive, but not as impressive as 1995, when ski runs were open until Aug. 10.

In a news release, A-Basin credited this year’s late closing to a snowy March and its high elevation (it’s 12,500 feet at the top of the highest lifts).

There was no beginning skiing available on July 4, but two lifts and several runs were open.
