A startup that developed an app-based marketing program targeting people looking to try new bars pulled in first place at the 2016 Jake Jabs Business Competition.

The University of Colorado Denver's Business School hosts the annual competition, now in its 15th year.

Users of Barventure, the first-place winning app created by the team from CU Denver, pay to access discounts and recommendations. Participating bars and restaurants, the team said, benefit by bringing in new customers. Meanwhile, advertisers on the app can reach specific and targeted demographics.

The CU Denver team won a $10,000 cash prize, as well as several "value-added" services, donated services like marketing, legal, public relations and business mentorship. It competed against collegiate teams from universities in Colorado, Arizona, Wyoming, New Mexico and Montana.
