Fun, easy science activities you can do at home

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science has some fun and educational ways to keep you busy.

DENVER — Looking for some fun, easy at home science ideas? The Denver Museum of Nature & Science has several.

Shadow Fun

  • Outline shadows at different times of the day
  • What you need: Chalk
  • Pick a couple of different times in the day, maybe an hour or so apart, then head to the driveway or sidewalk and trace your shadow. See how much the shadow moves as the sun moves in the sky.

Micro Hike

  • What you need: String, magnifying glass, journal
  • Use string to create a path through your yard. Use a magnifying glass to crawl along the ground, following the string, and see what tiny things you see along the route! Note what you see in your field journal.

Bird Watching

  • What you need: Piece of paper or journal, binoculars if you want!
  • Start a list of what you see – use Cornell Lab of Ornithology to identify what you see.

Plant Seeds

  • What you need: seeds from fruit, a spot in the backyard
  • Keep the pit from your avocado or lemon, plant it and see what happens. Don’t forget to water them!
